How to Apply Liquid Lipstick Like a Pro!

Liquid Lipstick

Liquid lipstick is here to stay, and it’s clear why. This genius lippie combines the longevity of a lip stain, the opacity of lipstick and the convenient wand application of a gloss. Everyone, from professional makeup artists to YouTube gurus, seems to be a fan. The first time you try to apply a liquid lipstick, it can be daunting. There’s a technique that you have to master, or this miracle product can turn into an unruly mess. Keep reading for a step-by-step guide to applying liquid lipstick like a pro, and join the lippie revolution!

-Liquid lipstick. Some of our favorites include Anastasia Liquid Lipstick, ColourPop Ultra Matte Lips, NYX Liquid Suede and Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick.

-Lip balm. Try to go for something intensely hydrating – you need all the moisture you can get! I love using Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Swivel Stick.

-A lip brush (optional). For a more precise line, you can use a lip brush either instead of, or with, the liquid lipstick applicator. ELF has a very affordable one available for $3.

-Concealer. Go for one with full coverage, so you can easily cover up any mistakes and clean up edges. My two top picks are Maybelline’s Fit Me Concealer and NARS’ Radiant Creamy Concealer.

STEP 1: A smooth canvas is important any time you’re applying a lip product, but it’s absolutely necessary when it comes to liquid lipstick. To ensure your lips are silky smooth, exfoliate them. Create an easy DIY lip scrub: mix equal parts honey and sugar. Then, use a toothbrush to gently scrub the mixture over your lips in circular motions. Do this for about thirty seconds, or until all of the flakiness is gone.

STEP 2: Apply an intensely hydrating lip balm at the start of your makeup routine. This will allow the balm to absorb. My favorite is Palmer’s Cocoa Butter: it just feels and smells so good. Move on to the rest of your makeup routine: eyes, face, etc. Once it’s time to focus on your lips, tissue off any excess balm.

Liquid Lipstick X Cupid's Bow

STEP 3: After watching countless YouTube videos and mastering the liquid lipstick process myself, I’ve come to a conclusion. Lip liner is not necessary. The liquid lipstick itself acts as a liner – a good one will not bleed or feather over your lips. To perfect your lips, work in small section and take care to make sure everything is neat and precise. Begin with your top lip. Take the wand (or a lip brush, if you want extra precision) and wipe off any excess product off of it. If you have too much product on the wand, it can get messy quick. Start at your Cupid’s bow, carefully outlining it. You can create an X if that helps your application. Proceed to drag out the lipstick from your Cupid’s bow to your outer corners in firm strokes. Smile to see where your lip line is. After you outline your top lip, fill it in with the remaining product.

STEP 4: Now it’s time to fill in your bottom lip. Smile and carefully follow the bottom curve of your lip with the wand, starting in the middle and working your way out towards the outer corners. The key to flawless liquid lipstick application is working in small sections: start in the middle, then proceed to the corners. Try to keep everything symmetrical and neat, but if you make a mistake, you can always clean it up with concealer later. After you finish outlining, fill in your bottom lip with the remaining product. If your lips look patchy (unfortunately this can happen with some liquid lipstick shades), let them dry, then go over them again until they are opaque.

STEP 5: If your lips aren’t looking as crisp and clean as you’d like, concealer is your friend. Take a flat angled brush (try the P88 by Sigma) and some concealer. Carefully blend it in around the perimeter of your lips to create a sharper line.
