I Woke Up Like This: How to Perfect the No-Makeup Makeup Look

No Makeup Makeup

There’s something so refreshingly, effortlessly cool about the ‘no-makeup’ look. It exudes confidence. The key to getting the look right isn’t forgoing makeup altogether; it’s about finding the most natural-looking products and using a light touch. Channel your inner Beyonce and read on for a step-by-step guide to ‘I Woke Up Like This’ beauty.

STEP 1: Drink up! Beauty starts from within, so make sure you’re treating your body right. Try to drink at least eight cups of water a day. Your skin will radiate, and blemishes will start to clear up.

STEP 2: Find a oil-free moisturizer that leaves your skin luminous. It will also double as a bit of a primer, to keep your makeup from slipping or fading throughout the day. My go-to is Clean & Clear’s Dual Action Moisturizer. It doubles as an acne-fighting product.

STEP 3: It’s time to apply your base. Perfecting the au naturale look is all about flawless skin, so find the product that works best for you. If you don’t have any visible blemishes or imperfections (lucky!), go with a tinted moisturizer like Laura Mercier. If you need little more coverage to hide dark spots and discoloration, try Smashbox’s Camera Ready BB Cream. Can’t imagine giving up foundation? You can still use it; just look for one that is as dewy and weightless as possible. Cakey is the opposite of what you should be going for. NARS’ Sheer Glow Foundation is incredible. No matter what you use for coverage, you should apply it in a stippling motion with a makeup sponge, like Real Techniques, to avoid any harsh lines. It looks more natural than using a brush, which is fine for a heavier look. Top it all off with a very light sweep of translucent powder (like NYX’s) on your oily spots (think forehead, nose, chin).

*Side note: all of our coverage options include SPF. If you don’t use a product with SPF, make sure to apply a lightweight sunscreen before your foundation/BB. Healthy skin is beautiful skin!

STEP 4: When it comes to blush, go with a cream that flatters your skin tone. To find the right color, picture what color your cheeks turn after a good workout. Pink? Peachy? Creams are buildable, last for hours and look natural. Revlon’s Pinched is a beautiful option. Remember to save your shimmery products for a more glam occasion. Glitter doesn’t exactly give off a lit-from-within glow 😉

STEP 5: Let’s move on to the eyes. If you love eyeshadow, you could sweep a matte neutral color over your lids, but I don’t think it’s necessary. Put the focus on your lashes instead. Find a good curler (Shiseido’s is my current favorite) and curl away! Give it a little extra oomph with a lengthening mascara, but consider swapping your typical black mascara for a more natural dark brown (the brush on MUFE’s Smoky Lash is unbelievable). When you’re applying the mascara, really get to the roots. This will make your lashes look full without eyeliner. Finish off your eyes by using a lash comb to get rid of any clumps.

STEP 6: Groomed brows are a crucial part of nailing the no-makeup look. If you have sparse spots, use a powder and angled brush instead of an eyebrow pencil or pomade. It’s the most natural option. Anastasia’s Brow Powder Duo is available in tons of colors, so you should be able to find a perfect match. After you apply the powder, blend it in with a spooley. Keep the whole look in place with a clear brow gel. Bobbi Brown’s is fantastic and keeps your brows put for hours.

STEP 7: Exfoliate your lips with a toothbrush and a tiny bit of Aquaphor to get rid of any dry patches. Another DIY scrub you can use to exfoliate is a mix of brown sugar and coconut oil – it will leave your lips soft and it smells delicious! Make sure your lips are hydrated and nourished, but avoid any major color. Go with a tinted lip balm. Personally, I adore Clinique Chubby Sticks.

STEP 8: To ensure your look stays fresh and radiant from morning to night, spritz some MAC Fix+ all over your face. Go with the mini version so you can keep it in your bag for touchups.
