There’s always a new ‘miracle product’ in the beauty world. “This will get rid of your undereye circles after two uses!” “Your wrinkles will disappear!” These magical products are, almost always, overhyped, a little disappointing and (worst case scenario) make your skincare issues even worse. That’s why I was hesitant when I first heard of micellar water – an all-in-one product that can act as a makeup remover, cleanser, toner and moisturizer. Too good to be true? Nope, this stuff actually works! With just one product, you can streamline your routine and vanity. No more fumbling through tons of serums, creams and oils. Micellar water can save you both time and money.
Popular in France for decades, this multi-tasking solution works wonders. If it’s good enough for the Parisians, it’s good enough for me! So, what is it exactly? Micellar water is composed of micelles, which is extremely small oil molecules suspended in water. These micelles are attracted to dirt and oil, so they pull out your impurities without drying out your skin. Essentially, it gets rid of the bad stuff, leaving your skin glowy, hydrated and refreshed. It works hard (it can get rid of almost any and all makeup), but is also safe to use on even the most sensitive and acne-prone skin. Best part? No rinsing required. Keep a bottle or some wipes next to your bed, and use it before you go to sleep. Easiest skincare routine ever!
Check out our ten micellar picks, below:
The one that started it all: Bioderma Sensibio H2O was a runaway hit in Europe long before it made its way to the US. This solution can be found in all French pharmacies, a drugstore mainstay. This formula is made especially for sensitive, normal to dry skin types. The fragrance-free, hypoallergenic solution has cucumber extract – perfect for that refreshing, spa-like feel. ($13 for 250 ml)
Vichy’s Purete Thermale 3-in-1 Calming Cleansing Solution is ideal for those with super sensitive skin and eyes. It’s safe to use for contact lens wearers, which anyone with lenses knows is a major benefit. There are so many products that can irritate your eyes, so it’s a relief to know this is specifically formulated not to. It’s extremely lightweight and gentle, and calms and soothes skin as it removes makeup. ($17 for 6.7 oz)
Simple’s Cleansing Micellar Water might be the product that’s really brought micellar water into American culture. Before this budget-friendly product, most of the people who had heard of micellar water were either major skincare buffs or extremely into European beauty. What’s amazing about this gentle product is that it works just as well as the more expensive options and it’s easily accessible. Head into your local CVS or Rite-Aid to pick up a bottle! ($8 for 6.7 oz)
Another micellar formula from the drugstore: L’Oreal’s Sublime Soft Micellar Water. It’s not available in American stores yet, but you can find this skin perfecting solution on Amazon. With one swipe, you’ll unclog pores, tone your face and get a dewy, luminous glow. ($37 for 3 bottles at 6.7 oz each)
Dior, as a brand, encapsulates everything French glamour, so it’s no surprise they’ve added an ‘eau micellaire’ to their product line. Dior Instant Cleansing Water with Pure Lily Extract feels like a splash of refreshing water on your face. Don’t underestimate lily extract – this key ingredient strengthens the formula, so feel free to use it on heavy-duty eye makeup, foundation and more. ($38 for 6.7 oz)
Rodial Dragon’s Blood Cleansing Water may be the most ironically-named beauty product ever. This micellar formula is extremely gentle – not exactly the characteristic the words ‘dragon’ or ‘blood’ bring to mind. This soothing cleanser uses rosewater to remove stubborn makeup, and Dragon’s Blood to calm stressed or tired skin. ($36 for 6.8 oz)
Liquid solutions not for you? Consider Koh Gen Do’s Cleansing Spa Water Cloths. These are perfect for traveling or popping into your bag. Use it after a long day outdoors or at the beach, whenever you need a refreshing pick-me-up. It’s infused with six essential herbs that protect, hydrate and nurture skin, leaving your face silky smooth. ($39 for 30 cloths)
Caudalie is one of my all-time favorite skincare brands. Everything is so gentle, from their cleansers to their exfoliants to hand creams. Their Micellar Cleansing Water is infused with orange, lemon, watermelon and mint for a uniquely fruity & refreshing scent, but feels like pure water on your skin. ($28 for 6.7 oz)
Sephora’s gotten into the micellar game with their Triple Action Cleansing Water. At $20 for a giant, 14-ounce bottle, this is a great buy. The pump dispenser makes the easy-to-use product even more convenient. Plus, it uses a special key ingredient, known as HydroSenn+, that delivers extra moisture and hydration for a radiant glow. ($20 for 14 oz)
Is this the first non-clear solution? Perricone MD’s Blue Plasma Cleansing Treatment stands out for that vivid hue alone. This product gets rid of even the most stubborn blackheads, so look into it if pores are a major skincare concern for you. Aside from getting icky blackheads out, it’s ultra-effective in getting out stubborn makeup, dirt and oil. ($39 for 4 oz)
So, can micellar water actually change your life? The answer to that is up for debate, but it can most definitely change and streamline the way you go about your skincare routine.
