Ramona is a freelance writer & Executive Consultant for Rodan + Fields Dermatologists. She is not new to the “aging gracefully” conversation. She wrote an article for the Huffington Post candidly admitting to lying about her age and created a passionate debate among the readers. She tells us about finding the perfect potions to turn back the clock, a journey that many women are familiar with, whether they admit it or not…

“There is always a moment, a defining moment that can change the way we see ourselves. For me, it came when it was time to renew my passport. There was a stark, if not harsh, difference between my  passport photo from the mid-90’s and the one I took 10 years later.  Up until that point I saw the same person in the mirror. The same face, hair color, eyes and crooked smile. “What happened to me?” I thought. I was shocked. Gone was the smooth, line-free face. As I compared the photos I realized, for the very first time, that I am aging.   I didn’t accept it. I figured it was the camera, the lighting, my hair, my makeup, but it wasn’t. It was life, and so began my beauty adventure.

When I would bring it up with my friends they would say, “are you kidding me, you haven’t changed” or “you look much younger than your age” or “you work out, do yoga and take care of yourself, you are too hard on yourself.” Still, all the OMs and bizarre yoga poses couldn’t erase the image of those passport photos. I began trying a variety of facials, different types of moisturizers, peels and masks. The shelves of my medicine cabinet were packed with hundreds of dollars of products. My skin felt and looked the same and those nagging lines were still there.

One summer while visiting my family in Michigan I took my nephew to the dermatologist. This is the same dermatologist I saw for acne back when I was in college. I chatted with him for a while and before leaving I pointed to the lines on my face. “I can make that look better,” he told me. I left with my nephew and asked him what he thought the doctor meant by that comment. “He means it doesn’t look good and he can make it look better,” said my nephew. Don’t you just love teenagers? “Thanks a lot,” I replied. The next day I found myself in his office for a consultation and the following day I had a filler injected. “This is amazing,” I thought. The results were instant. Just like that I felt like a million bucks. Everyone I saw afterward thought I had a restful vacation. I didn’t tell my husband and when I returned to NY, his reaction was simply, “wow, you’re glowing, you look great. You must have had a nice time with your family.” After a day or so, I confessed. About a year later, I did it again and this time I included Botox injections. It was a birthday gift to myself. Once again, I felt terrific and I loved the reaction from others. The only problem with these injections is they’re expensive and I couldn’t keep up with the cost.

Recent twists and turns in my life led me to my own business. I have  now partnered with Rodan + Fields, the doctors who created Proactiv Solution (the acne medication), on their new business venture that focuses on anti-aging. Can this relationship be anymore perfect? Not only have I seen changes in my own skin without breaking the bank, but I also help others with their beauty adventures. Suddenly, my obsession has become my passion. And so the journey continues…”
