A Roundup of the Biggest Beauty Trends of 2015

2015 beauty trends

What a year! Due in large part to the always-increasing impact of social media, there were more beauty trends popping up this year than ever before. From ’90s beauty to strobing to multi-masking, the biggest trends of the year were exciting, fun and fresh. Keep reading to reminisce on the year in beauty, and let us know: what trend defined 2015 for you?

CONTOURING: 2015 was the year contouring went mainstream. In the past, it was thought of as a makeup technique better left to professionals and Kardashians, but thanks to easy-to-use kits and informative YouTube videos, contouring has become accessible to everyone. Don’t have razor-sharp cheekbones or the strongest jawline? Use the strategic placement of light and dark creams and powders to make it seem like you do! STROBING: Over the summer, everyone went crazy over strobing. Strobing is essentially a fancy word for major highlighting. Dubbed the ‘anti-contour,’ the look is all about using highlighter to emphasize your features. Apply it to your cheekbones, bridge of your nose, inner corner and anywhere else you want to bring attention to. For a step-by-step guide to strobing, click here. (Image via MiMiChatter)

full lips

FULL LIPS: Do you remember the insanity of the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge?! Thousands of fans trying to emulate Kylie’s plumped-up pout went to extreme lengths to achieving the look…with some even popping blood vessels! Any clever beauty lover knows that you don’t have to go that far to emulate a look – you can get Kylie lips simply by over-lining! The name pretty much speaks for itself: apply lip liner ever so slightly outside the perimeter of your lips to create the illusion of fuller lips. For a complete tutorial, click here. BAKING: Baking is a trend that’s been picking up a lot of steam recently. It’s a technique that’s all about using a ton of powder to add extra definition to your face and contour. After you apply your foundation and concealer, you apply an extremely heavy layer of powder with a BeautyBlender to the areas you want to set (under your eyes, under your contoured cheekbones to sharpen the line…) and let it sit for up to ten minutes. While it’s setting, do other parts of your makeup. After ten minutes, dust off the excess powder and blend. (Tip: if you have super dry skin, don’t bake – it can settle into your fine lines and draw more attention to the area.) (Image via @HeidiMakeupArtist)

korean beauty

KOREAN BEAUTY: Beauty and skincare insiders have been going wild for Korean beauty for quite a while, but it became an undeniable force to be reckoned with in 2015. Thanks in part to a major push by Sephora, it seems like everyone is intrigued by K-beauty. What makes K-beauty so great? The makeup is innovative (many products we’ve just began receiving in America have been popular in Korea for years) and the skincare is in a league of its own. MULTI-MASKING: The viral trend of multi-masking is all about common sense. Different parts of your face have different needs – pore-refining, hydrating, calming – so why would you put one mask on every area? Instead, allocate different masks to specific parts of your face. MARSALA: Near the end of every year, Pantone chooses a Color of the Year that predicts beauty and home trends for the upcoming 365 days. 2015’s color was Marsala, a sophisticated, earthy wine red. The super-wearable color was a dream for beauty junkies. Check out our favorite LIPSTICKS and NAIL POLISHES. Can’t wait to see how Rose Quartz and Serenity are used in 2016! matte lips

‘90s MATTE LIPSTICK: One of the biggest trends of 2015 was a throwback – the ‘90s are back!! Towards the start of the year, mauve-hued shades were the hottest lip color, but now it’s all about the brown lip. Brown lips can range from light brown-nudes to deep reddish-brown tones. COLORED EYELINER: During the warmer months especially, it’s so fun to play around with your makeup and get creative with colorful looks. This past summer, colored eyeliner had a major moment. People broke away from classic black liner and experimented with bold, eye-opening shades like turquoise, pink and yellow. Check out tons of colored eyeliner photos to inspire you, here. LIQUID LIPSTICK: Liquid lipstick absolutely dominated the beauty world in 2015. The do-it-all product combines the longevity of a lip stain with the opacity of lipstick and convenient wand application of a gloss. It’s such a nice feeling to eat an entire meal and not have to worry about your lipstick getting on your teeth or fading away. The only thing with liquid lipstick is that the right application technique takes some practice – you will definitely need a mirror when you’re applying it!
