The Oscars are, without a doubt, the biggest night in Hollywood. Every star steps it up and brings their A-game: the most glamorous gowns, jaw-dropping jewelry and, of course, memorable hair and makeup. The 2016 Academy Awards were no different – the red carpet was an endless parade of elegant and sophisticated looks. Keep reading for our sixteen favorite beauty looks of the night.
Alicia Vikander typically embodies that effortlessly cool vibe, but for the Oscars, she wanted a princess moment. Her dress, which many on the Internet likened to Belle’s of Beauty and the Beast, was straight out of a fairytale. She complemented it with simple, understated makeup, but added some of her signature style with a half-up topknot. It’s not an easy hairstyle to pull off, but the juxtaposition of a casual hairstyle with such an elegant gown worked.
From the amazing braided updo to that choker and stunning, plunging Valentino gown, there was a lot going on with Olivia Wilde’s look. To keep it from being over-the-top, her makeup artist Melanie Inglessis made sure the makeup was soft and simple. Wilde is a Revlon spokesperson, so she naturally used products from the beloved drugstore line. She used Revlon’s ColorStay 16 Hour Eyeshadow on her eyes.
Chrissy Teigen’s got that pregnancy glow: she was luminous last night. Her makeup artist, the iconic Mary Phillips (JLo’s go-to girl), used LORAC’s Pro Matte Lip Color in Nude and Rose Brown to line her lips and filled them in with LORAC’s Alter Ego Lip Gloss in Socialite. As for that incredibly intricate braided updo? All the work of the masterful Christian Wood.
Jennifer Lawrence missed the red carpet last night, but she still turned heads. With blonder-than-usual locks, JLaw looked absolutely stunning. She knew that the intense platinum hair was statement-making enough on its own. She decided to leave it down and fuss-free – a fantastic call. For her makeup, it was classic glam: a simple, neutral smoky and a swipe of pinky-nude gloss.
Margot Robbie’s effortless beauty at the Oscars was one of the top looks of the night. It doesn’t hurt that she’s drop dead gorgeous, but from the undone beachy waves to the golden goddess makeup, she looked like an Oscar statuette come to life. Her makeup artist, Tyron Machhausen, used Laura Mercier’s Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation in Butterscotch and Dune, and set it with Tom Ford’s Skin Illuminating Powder Duo.
To keep her Givenchy gown from washing her out, Rooney Mara wisely amped up her beauty look. Her deep crimson lip is everything. For a similar look, try Kat Von D’s Vampira Studded Kiss Lipstick or Maybelline’s ColorSensational in Deepest Cherry. Her unique three-knot updo was a hairstyle standout of the night.
Saoirse Ronan didn’t take home an Oscar last night, but she definitely looked like a winner. She complemented her slinky Calvin Klein gown with voluminous hair and sultry, kohl-rimmed eyes. Her makeup artist, Mai Quynh, used Chanel’s Illusion D’Ombre Longwear Luminous Eyeshadow in Moonlight Pink all over her eyes, then added Stylo Yeux Eyeliner in Purple Choc for an extra pop.
Lady Gaga brought the glamour last night. How stunning is her eyeshadow?! Her makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, went with a monochromatic pink and rose look. She used products from Sisley Paris – that beautiful rose eye is Sisley’s Phyto-Ombré Eclat Eye Shadow in Mango. Paired with her Old Hollywood hair, the look was a home run.
It should come as a surprise to no one that the breathtakingly beautiful Priyanka Chopra was a previous Miss World. Her skin was flawless and her eyelashes were full and fluttery, but the highlight of her look was that ’90s lip. Her makeup artist, Stephanie Brooke Barnes, used Laura Mercier’s Velour Lovers Lip Colour in Cocoa Pout and Seduction.
Beauty rules are made to be broken. Olivia Munn matched her lipstick to her gown, and she truly had one of the best beauty looks of the night. Her look was modern, sleek and chic. Her center-parted updo was incredible, as was her orange Stella McCartney gown. Her makeup artist, the brilliant Patrick Ta, used various shades of orange on her eyes, cheeks and lips. It’s something that sounds like it shouldn’t work on paper, but it clearly did. Inspired to try orange lipstick yourself? Ta mixed Chanel’s Rouge Allure Lipstick in 90 Pimpante and 96 Excentrique for the unique hue.
Rachel McAdams’s makeup artist? Her sister, Kayleen McAdams! She went with Chanel makeup for Rachel’s look. She used Chanel’s Rouge Coco Stylo in Conte for her soft pink lip. For the standout part of her beauty look, the emerald green eyeliner that matched her August Getty gown, she used Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Eyeshadow in Griffith Green.
The night’s big winner, Brie Larson, has had a strong makeup game this entire awards season. She kept her makeup fairly simple, which was a wise choice. She knew she would probably win, and when that’s the case, it’s a good idea to go with a timeless, elegant look – this isn’t the time to play around with fun trends. Just like Saoirse Ronan, her makeup artist, Rachel Goodwin, used Chanel’s Stylo Yeux Eyeliner in Purple Choc. The highlight of her look was her elegant, pulled-back hairstyle by Mara Roszak. She finished the look with the Arielle Chignon Wrap by Jennifer Behr.
Cate Blanchett is a red carpet veteran. She gets it right every single time. Her Armani gown was an absolute work of art, so she left her hair and makeup extremely simple (yet flawless!) so as not to compete. This woman can do no wrong.
Emily Blunt is pregnant, and she was completely glowing last night. Her skin looked flawless. Her makeup artist, Jenn Streicher, used Laura Mercier’s Shimmer Bloc in Pink Mosaic to play up her radiant complexion.
Charlize Theron has that movie star quality that you cannot learn. When she steps into the room, or onto the red carpet, everyone takes notice. She looked positively regal last night. Her clean makeup, bronze smoky eye and swept up hair were the perfect complements to her daring Dior gown.
Jennifer Garner was a vision last night. She and her hairstylist, Ben Skervin, were inspired by Grace Kelly for her elegant chignon. Her makeup artist, Genevieve Herr, gave her a smoldering charcoal smoky eye and soft nude lip (Neutrogena’s Classic Nude MoistureSmooth).
